MARSHALL

Overview:     Marshall signed 18 players twelve different states, the District of Columbia, and Canada, for a signing class that fills their current needs at WR and SS, while building depth across the board.  The Herd signed the best college prospects from their home state and brought in four JUCOs for immediate needs.  Marshall signed six line prospects, three for both sides, and six other skilled players who will be split three for offense side and the defensive side respectively.  The Herd signed RB Earl Charles, one of the top overall JUCO prospects this year, who should battle immediately for a starting job, as well as DT Jamaal Whyce, a JUCO top-101 player who will be in their two-deep lineup this fall.

Highlights:

  • Marcus Fitzgerald is the brother of Larry Fitzgerlad, the record setting freshman WR at Pitt this past fall.  Marcus has worked as a ball boy for all of the Minnesota Vikings home games.
  • Marshall signed two players who were their respected state linemen of the year award winners.  Nate Howard won this prep award in West Virginia while John Inmand did the same for Tennessee.
  • WR Hiram Moore is from Huntington High School, just a few blocks from Marshall University.
  • Some recruiting publications listed Geremy Rodamer as the top prep prospect in West Virginia this year.  He shunned hometown WVU to play for Marshall.
  • Incoming kicker Ian OConnor will have a chance to play as a true freshman, replacing the graduated Curtis Head.

Final Thoughts;

This is a typical Marshall recruiting class, quality linemen, skilled players who can play a variety of positions, and speed, speed, speed.  Marshall did right by bringing in a few players who can contribute right away in needed areas like SS, D-line & WR.  Some of the freshmen brought in will have to wait their turn before making the two-deep roster, but they bring in with them some talent so that depth was added at needed positions.  Like the previous three years I have been doing these MAC recruiting rankings, Marshall went toe to toe to go after players being recruited by ACC & SEC schools, and signed a few of them.  Overall this class ranks as EXCELLENT compared to other MAC programs this year and should continue to keep Marshall in the hunt for future titles.
