2009 Buffalo Football Recruiting

Buffalo Recruiting Overview:

Buffalo Bulls football recruiting Buffalo signed 23 prospects from six different states. Of those 23 recruits, 21 are incoming freshmen and there is one player listed (LB Darius Willis) who was a late qualifier from the 2008 class, and one JUCO. Six players hail from the state of New York, five from Florida, four from Texas, three from PA and SC and two from Ohio. UB signed four players each at DB and DL, three each for LB and OL, two each for FB, RB, WR and TE and one QB. In terms of numbers, this is the largest class Coach Turner Gill has signed during his tenure. Of note, Willis is not considered within the ranking since he was counted in the 2008 analysis.

Top Players for UB:

  • Carlos Lammons, 5-9, 185, DB, Pahokee, FL

A physical but undersized safety in high school, he was rated as the 44 th best safety prospect in the country by ESPN/Scout. He will likely be a CB in college. He was heavily recruited by Sun Belt schools and received serious interest from Big East and Big Ten programs. His cousin is Anquan Boldin of the Arizona Cardinals.

  • Matt Jones, 6-3, 240, LB/FB, Rochester, Aquinas Institute, Milford Academy

A three-star recruit from Rivals who excelled on both sides of the ball. Jones was recruited by Temple and Syracuse.

  • Rick Perez, 6-2, 265, C, Miami (FL) South Dade

Perez was ranked the 11 th best center prospect in the nation by ESPN/Scout. He was a second team all-county player who went up against some of the best high school competition in the country. Due to his smaller size he was not as heavily recruited from BCS programs.

Sleepers in the UB Recruiting Class:

  • Jeffvon Gill, 5-11, 195, RB, Euclid, OH

Rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 10 TDs as a senior playing against top rated high school competition in the greater Cleveland area. Selected to play in the Big-33 game. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Jeffvon is a distant cousin to Coach Turner Gill.

  • Jake Reeder, 6-4, 250, TE, State College, PA

You can’t coach size and Reeder certainly has the size to excel at the TE position. Reeder was ranked as the #119 TE prospect in the country by ESPN/Scout.

Final Analysis for Buffalo:

Buffalo needed to get bigger and more physical at the DT and the LB areas and this class certainly helps them in those areas. Two solid ILBs and some quality DTs could make an impact as early as this fall. QB Alex Dennison and speedy RB Branden Oliver are typical of this class of guys who may not have been highly recruited but are just flat out good football players. Gill and his staff really mined the states of Florida and Texas for quality players too. Considering the Bulls just won the MAC this year with many players from the previous coaching staff, this is the type of class that will keep UB in the hunt no matter if Turner Gill leaves after this season for a BCS program. Overall this class rates as VERY GOOD compared to other MAC schools.
