Overview The Eagles signed 24 players from five different states with a heavy emphasis on defensive linemen, defensive backs and running backs. Thirteen players are from Michigan, six from Ohio, two each from Florida and Indiana, and one from Virginia. Eleven players are listed for offense with thirteen listed for defense.

Quarterbacks
Two QB prospects were signed, Jason Williams from Miamisburg (OH) and Kyle McMahon from Rochester (MI). Williams is a multi-threat QB who can run or pass, accounted for over 2,000 yards as a senior. McMahon had nearly identical numbers during his senior year and earned honorable mention all-state honors.
Running Backs
The most interesting recruit in the MAC this year is Aeric Clay from Toledo (OH) Bowsher. Clay finished 2 nd in the state of Ohio track sprints behind Brandon Saine, the #1 recruit for Ohio State. Clay was injured most of his senior year but in his one complete game he rushed for 377 yards. At 6-2 217 with 4.45/40 speed, he could become a real gem in the Eagle program. Maurice Goodrum was very productive at Detroit’s Henry Ford High while Jayson Jones from Jacksonville (FL) averaged almost 9-yards per carry and scored 18 TDs. Both are in the 5-8 180 range. Dwayne Priest from the Fork Union Military Academy (VA) may provide immediate help at RB. Priest was a top-30 rated player in Virginia coming out of high school in 2005.
Receivers
Eastern’s coaching staff targeted David Fox from Muskegon (MI) and were able to land him. Fox was very productive in high school and proved to be a quality receiver with good size at 6-2 190. Fox is a top-25 rated player in Michigan. Trey Hunter is from Cleveland (OH) East High and proved to be a valuable receiver and hick return specialist in high school. TE Dan Youssif was an underrated player at Birmingham’s (MI) Brother Rice High since he played in a run-oriented offense.
Offensive Line
Sometimes coaching changes at BCS schools can lead to fallen gems coming into MAC programs. That is what happened to Darrell Davis-Budanauro from Grand Rapids (MI). Budanauro was already fully committed to Michigan State before John L. Smith was fired and the new coaching staff did not honor his scholarship offer. This huge offensive line prospect (6-4, 350) needed to scramble late in the recruiting time period and EMU was extremely fortunate to get him. He could become an impact player in Ypsilanti. Bridger Buche earned all state honors from Portland (MI) as did Derek Gotham from South Lyon (MI). All three have good size.
Defensive Line
Six defensive linemen were added in this class with Adam Brockman being the most unknown commodity. Brockman played just one year of high school football after moving from California to Indiana. That did not keep him from earning first team all-state honors during his only year of football and a top-50 listing in Indiana’s final prep prospect rankings. Jeremy Shrieves is from Dayton’s Huber Hts Wayne High and will participate in the annual Big-33 Classic between Ohio & Pennsylvania all-stars. Javon Reese is a DE prospect from Fort Wayne (IN). The other three defensive line prospects are all from Michigan; Brad Ohrman, Tyler Palsrock and Brandon Slater. Ohrman earned first team all-state honors as a senior.
Linebackers
The lone LB signed is Chris Bittner from Birmingham (MI). Bittner is an OLB prospect who earned all-metro honors as a senior.
Defensive Backs
Five DB prospects were signed led by two players from Trotwood Madison (OH); Marcus English and Shawn Knight. Both are big hitters with good speed. English will be a safety while Knight will enter college as a CB. Orlando’s (FL) Arrington Hicks is lightening fast and was one of Florida’s top sprinters. Martavius Cardwell and Kevin Long are Michigan prospects who are each ranked in top-50.
Specialists
No players were listed for this position.
Final Analysis
Coach Jeff Genyk has always preached to recruit his home state first and especially the greater Detroit area to maintain “motor city mindset.” For the third straight year he and his staff have done just that and along the way, signed some very good talent that they could not have touched a few years ago under the previous two EMU coaching regimes. The class addressed the immediate need for running backs and defensive backs and also built up both lines with quality players. The three offensive line prospects are extremely impressive. While this class rates a VERY GOOD compared to other MAC schools this year, few recruiting classes have the upside potential of this group.
