Nick's 2006 MAC Football Picks - Week #12 Recap> Current MAC Standings (opens in new window) Ball State @ ToledoNick’s Pick: Toledo 28 – Ball State 21 Actual score: Ball State 20 – Toledo 17 Line: Toledo by 5 Pre Game Comment: Toledo is on a late season roll and has a real shot at a .500 record. Ball State nearly pulled off the stunner of stunners at Michigan on November 4th. Both teams feature two very talented true freshmen leading their teams and UT has only lost three home games in the past seven seasons. Give the nod to Toledo at home. Post Game Comment: True freshman Nate Davis played terrific for the Cardinals and Toledo could just never put away Ball State in losing their second home game of the season. The Cardinals displayed superior perimeter offensive speed versus UT’s defensive backs.
Miami @ Bowling GreenNick’s Pick: Miami 27 – BGSU 24 Actual Score: Miami 9 – BGSU 7 Line: BGSU by 4 Pre Game Comment: This is a difficult game to pick since Miami has had a tremendous amount of injuries this season and currently has less than 70 scholarship players dressing. Bowling Green has been a very up and down team this year and has their fare share of youth. All in all – this game is a true pick ‘em. With so many close defeats this season you have to thing that the RedHawks are more than due to win a close game. Post Game Comment: Bowling Green dominated the first half but had only a seven point lead to show for it. Miami dominated the second half and needed a true freshman place-kicker to slip and miss a short FG to secure the game played in a sloppy mess. Surprisingly there was just one turnover combined for the entire game.
Akron @ OhioNick’s Pick: Ohio 24 – Akron 21 Actual Score: Ohio 17 – Akron 7 Line: Ohio by 6 Pre Game Comment: With a Bobcat win Ohio will play Central Michigan in the MAC Championship Game and likely receive a GMAC Bowl bid. A loss would put a huge wrench into the east division standings and give the Zips a chance to repeat. Akron’s biggest problem has been penalties – look for one or two inopportune flags to really kill Akron at the wrong time. Don’t look know but the "Marching 110" will be going to Mobile. Post Game Comment: Kalvin McRae rushed for 136 yards while Akron as a team rushed for -4 as the Bobcats earned their first ever trip to the MACC and will receive their first bowl birth since 1968.
Eastern Michigan @ Kent StateNick’s Pick: Kent State 20 – Eastern Michigan 14 Actual Score: Kent State 14 – Eastern Michigan 6 Line: Kent State by 13 Pre Game Comment: Kent State looked to have their first bowl opportunity since 1972 locked up three weeks ago but with three straight losses that has now become a long shot. Eastern continues to battle most MAC teams well but usually falls short of victory. Kent really needs to win their final two games for any hope of a bowl birth in either the Poinsettia Bowl or Birmingham Bowl – both of which may be reaches. Post Game Comment: Kent State produced five turnovers including four INTs as the Golden Flashes beat the hard-luck Eagles at Dix stadium. KSU’s Julian Edelman returned and played a very efficient game. Eastern has lost six games this season by 8 points or less.
Central Michigan @ Northern IllinoisNick’s Pick: Central Michigan 28 – NIU 20 Actual Score: NIU 31 – Central Michigan 10 Line: Central by 3 Pre Game Comment: NIU’s home loss last week all but assures the Huskies that they will not receive a bowl bid this year – a huge disappointment to this resurging program under Joe Novak. Central has already won the West division and will represent the MAC in the Motor City Bowl this January. The ‘Chips continue to role and will win a close contest. Post Game Comment: Even though the Chippewas have won the MAC West division they found out the hard way that you must bring your “A” game every week in order to win. NIU’s Garrett Wolfe returned to his star status with a 203-yard effort to become the school’s all-time leading rusher.
Buffalo @ #10 WisconsinNick’s Pick: Wisconsin 33 – Buffalo 10 Actual Score: Wisconsin 35 – Buffalo 3 Line: Wisconsin by 38 Pre Game Comment: Wisconsin can win 11 games for the first time ever and that is basically their only motivation with rare non-conference game to end their regular season. The Badgers will be getting a major bowl bid and basically will go through the motions and save their best players for this contest. UB has a chance for a respectable outing if they can play error-free football. Post Game Comment: UB trailed just 7-3 after the first quarter before the Badgers rolled.
Western Michigan @ Florida StateNick’s Pick: Florida State 34 – Western Michigan 20 Actual Score: Florida State 28 – Western Michigan 20 Line: Florida State by 15 Pre Game Comment: Who would have thought that FSU would only be a 15 or 16-point favorite in this contest back in August? Who could have imagined that the Seminoles would be 5-5 this late in the year? Western is looking to rebound from their poor performance in Mount Pleasant last week while FSU is coming off of a 30-0 drubbing from Wake Forest. The Broncos have already beaten one ACC team this year and will put a scare into Florida State before FSU pulls away late. Post Game Comment: The Broncos played a terrific game and had a shot to put this game into OT. Statistically Western had more total yards (262-251) than the Seminoles but FSU was penalized just three times for 20 yards for the entire game. Still, a terrific effort by Western!
