2010 Nick’s Picks – MAC Preview & Review (Week #12)

 

MAC & Team Notes:

  • A battle of 5-1 teams from the East Division takes place when Ohio visits Temple on Tue., Nov. 16 at 8 pm ET on ESPN2.
  • Miami became bowl eligible for the first time since 2005 after a 24-21 win at Bowling Green on Nov. 10. Miami is 6-4 on the year, 5-1 in the East Division and remain in a three-way tie for first with Ohio (5-1) and Temple (5-1).
  • Northern Illinois took command of the MAC West Division after an impressive 65-30 win over Toledo on Nov. 9. The Huskies improved to 8-2 overall and remain unbeaten in conference play at 6-0. Toledo dropped to 6-4 on the year, 5-1 in the MAC.
  • Kent State currently ranks third in the nation in rush defense (85.7 ypg) and 17th overall in total defense (307.1 ypg) after a 45-28 loss to Army. Kent State has held seven of ten opponents this season under 100 yards rushing this year.

 

Player Notes:

  • Miami ’s Nick Harwell caught 10 passes for 125 yards and one touchdown in Miami’s 24-21 win over Bowling Green. The totals mark his second century receiving game of his career and the second time he has reached double figures in catches.
  • NIU’s Chandler Harnish accounted for 311 yards of total offense while commanding the Northern Illinois offense in the Huskies’ 65-30 victory over Toledo; Harnish completed 11-of-16 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown, and ran for 149 yards on 13 carries with a rushing touchdown.
  • Eastern Michigan QB Alex Gillett accounted for 373 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-30 loss at Western Michigan. Gillett rushed for 159 yards on 22 carries and one score and threw for three touchdowns on 13-of-24 passing for 214 yards.
  • Central Michigan QB Ryan Radcliff threw for 394 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-37 loss at Navy. Radcliff’s 36 completions and 58 attempts were the second most in program history.
  • Western Michigan RB Brian Fields rushed for a season-high three touchdowns for 107 yards in a 45-30 win over Eastern Michigan.
  • Toledo RB Adonis Thomas rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns in a 65-30 loss at Northern Illinois.
  • Ball State RB Eric Williams had 27 carries for 109 yards in a 20-3 win at Buffalo.
  • Miami QB Zac Dysert threw for 221 yards and one touchdown on 19-of-25 passing in a 24-21 win at Bowling Green. Dysert also added a one yard rushing touchdown in the victory.
  • Kent State WR Tyshon Goode collected seven receptions for 155 yards and one touchdown in a 45-28 loss to Army.

Ohio plays the final two games on the road (at Temple, at Kent State)...Bobcats are 5-1 in Athens and 2-2 on the road...Ohio ranks tied for 15 th in the nation in red zone offense (89.0%)...DB Julian Posey ranks tied for 18th in the country with 11 passes defended...Bobcats rank 16th in the nation in rush defense (115.9 ypg). Temple hosts Ohio and then travel to Miami to finish the regular season...DT Muhammad Wilkerson ranks tied for 14th in the nation with 8.5 sacks...Owls rank tied for tenth in the nation in scoring defense (17.5 ppg), 18th in total defense (312.2 ypg), tied for 20th in red zone defense (74.0%) and 21st in rush defense (121.7 ypg).

Nick’s Pick: Temple 27 – Ohio 17

Comment: Easily the best MAC game of the weekend with divisional title and bowl bid on the line. Look for the Owls to avenge last years thumping in Athens.

Miami ranks 17th in the nation in time of possession (31:54). Akron finishes the regular season with two home games (vs.

Miami , vs. Buffalo)...LB Brian Wagner ranks 18th in the nation with 102 total tackles (10.2 tpg)...RB Alex Allen ranks ninth in the MAC in rushing offense (64.5 ypg)...DE Shawn Lemon ranks third in the conference with seven sacks.

Comment: Miami is playing for bowl after going 1-11 last season; that must be inspiration for the Zips as they will most likely finish the season 0-12.

The Falcons have 28 takeaways this season and rank third in the MAC in turnover differential (+3)...QB Matt Schilz is tied for 15th in the nation with 22.5 completions per game...WR Kamar Jorden ranks fourth in the country in receptions per game (8.0), 12th in receiving yards per game (92.0) and 13th in total receiving yards (920). Comment: Each team figures this is a game they can win and build upon going into 2011, expect a close game.

Western QB Alex Carder ranks sixth in the nation in passing yards per game (292.0 ypg), eighth in total passing yards (2,920) and eighth in completions per game (24.5)...DB Lewis Toler is tied for tenth in the nation in passes defended (12) and 23rd in interceptions (4).

Comment: Each team is looking to close out their season at 6-6 and have some sort of respectability as each had much higher hopes for their 2010 season. Western’s offense is better so give the nod to the Broncos.

Comment: The Rockets just could not stop the Huskies as NIU looked like a real Top-25 team.

Actual Score: Miami 24 – BGSU 21

Comment: Miami wins on the last play of the game in the fog.

 

Nick’s Pick: Buffalo 26 – Ball State 17

Actual Score: Ball State 20 – Buffalo 3

Comment: Ball State’s defense limited Buffalo to only 144 net yards of offense, including 88 net yards rushing, and knocked starting quarterback Alex Zordich out of the game early.

 

Nick’s Pick: Army 35 – Kent State 14

Actual Score: Army 45 – Kent State 28

Comment: Pretty much as we predicted it…

 

Nick’s Pick: Western 30 – Eastern 13

Actual Score: Western 45 – Eastern 30

Comment: The Broncos were in control all along.

 

Nick’s Pick: Navy 52 – Central 20

Actual Score: Navy 38 – Central 37

Comment: Central Michigan scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the contest; however a two-point conversion fell incomplete with four seconds remaining.
