2010 MAC Football Picks - Week #1 Recap
The MAC opened the 2010 college football season going 6-7. Along the way there were some impressive efforts in some of those losses. The Bowling Green Falcons went back and forth with a very solid Troy team on the road before losing 30-27 on a FG in the final seconds. After posting a meager 1-11 record in 2009, the Miami RedHawks ventured to Gainsville FL and held the 4 th ranked Gators to just 235-yards of total offense in their 34-12 loss. Even more impressive is that this game was still in doubt into the 4 th period. Kudos to both programs putting up a good fight in their defeat. Breaking down the numbers more, the MAC went 6-0 against teams from the FCS (I-AA) level and 0-7 against teams from the FBS (IA) group. Here is a quick look at all of the MAC contests over the weekend. Most Impressive Win Least Impressive Performance As noted above, the Falcons lost at Troy on a FG with just seconds to play. Also, Eastern Michigan played very well but gave up a TD with just 38-seconds left in their 31-27 loss to an improving Army team.

Luke’s Lock: Buffalo 42 – RIU 7 Actual Score: Buffalo 31 – RIU 0 Initial Comment: The Bulls have more talent – period. Post Comment: Nailed it – Jerry Davis throws four TDs passes in Coach Jeff Quinn’s debut.
Luke’s Lock: Kent State 30 – Murray State 10 Actual Score: Kent State 41 – Murray State 10 Initial Comment: Could this be the year Kent State gets back to a bowl? If so, it would be the first time since 1972. Starting 1-0 is a definite. Post Comment: Nailed it – Spencer Keith throws for 275-yards and three TDs. Luke’s Lock: Central 52 – Hampton 14 Actual Score: Central 33 – Hampton 0 Initial Comment: The ‘Chips will roll under the leadership of the new coaching staff. Post Comment: New QB Ryan Radcliff accounts for two TDs and throws for 242-yards.
Luke’s Lock: Iowa State 24 – NIU 21 Actual Score: Iowa State 27 – NIU 10 Initial Comment: This will go to the wire; NIU has a real shot at a nice BCS road win. Post Comment: Thought this one would be closer, NIU’s Chad Spann rushed for 80-yards.
Luke’s Lock: Temple 21 – ‘Nova 20 Actual Score: Temple 31 – ‘Nova 24 Initial Comment: Quite possible the best game of the week; the Owls will win the Mayor’s Cup this year after a gut wrenching loss last season. Post Comment: Nailed it – may be the most exciting game and best win of the year for Temple
Luke’s Lock: Arizona 31 – Toledo 24 Actual Score: Arizona 41 – Toledo 2 Initial Comment: Look for the Rockets to make this an entertaining game and yes, UT always has a real shot to beat a BCS team at home. They’ve done so three straight seasons. Post Comment: Is Arizona that good or is Toledo that bad? The next few weeks will tell.
Luke’s Lock: Florida 63 – Miami (O) 3 Actual Score: Florida 34 – Miami (O) 12 Initial Comment: Not a good game for Miami to play at this point in time during their program’s rebuilding stage. Post Comment: Miami played very well, with more performances like this and the RedHawks will be back in contention much sooner than expected.
Luke’s Lock: Michigan State 33 – Western 14 Actual Score: Michigan State 38 – Western 14 Initial Comment: The Spartans should control this contest from start to finish. Post Comment: Nailed it – Alex Carder throws for 220-yards and two TDs.
Luke’s Lock: Syracuse 26 – Akron 17 Actual Score: Syracuse 29 – Akron 3 Initial Comment: The Orange are improved while Akron has several unanswered questions. The Zips have the talent to pull the upset but can the new coaching staff build a winning mindset? Post Comment: 166-yards of total offense and just 15,969 fans for a home game against a Big East team on a beautiful day with no Ohio State game as competition is pathetic.
Luke’s Lock: Army 30 – EMU 9 Actual Score: Army 31 – EMU 27 Initial Comment: This may be one of the chances Eastern has to win a game in 2010. Post Comment: EMU got my memo above and played hard until the end, this could have been a very nice win both for the MAC and for Eagles.
Luke’s Lock: Ohio 27 – Wofford 7 Actual Score: Ohio 33 – Wofford 10 Initial Comment: The Bobcats rarely beat anyone badly. OU will win but the score will not be a blow out. Post Comment: Nailed it – OU rushes for 231-yards and holds the Terriers to less than ten yards passing.
Luke’s Lock: Troy 28 – BGSU 17 Actual Score: Troy 30 – BGSU 27 Initial Comment: The Falcons upset Troy last year to open the season, look for the Trojan to return the favor. BG is a team in transition, so is Troy this season. This game may be closer than the score indicates. Post Comment: Coach Clawson showed us last year than he can develop and elevate QB play and offenses right away – will the Falcons be the sleeper of the MAC in the 2010?
