MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE IMPOSES SUSPENSION OF BUFFALO STUDENT-ATHLETE ANDREW WEST

Cleveland, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference (MAC) office announced that it will impose a one-game suspension on University at Buffalo football student-athlete Andrew West for violating the MAC Sportsmanlike Conduct Bylaws during Buffalo’s game against Ohio on Nov. 10, 2009. West will be suspended for Buffalo’s next regular season game at Miami on Nov. 18, 2009.

The MAC determined that West’s actions during the fourth quarter of the Ohio contest violated the conference bylaws and sport operating codes section 8.03. “In the event of flagrant acts or additional offenses, violators shall be subject to public reprimand or suspension from additional contest(s) as the Commissioner deems appropriate.”

“The behavior of Andrew West during the Buffalo – Ohio contest is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” said Dr. Jon Steinbrecher, Commissioner of the MAC. “I want to thank Buffalo Head Coach Turner Gill and Director of Athletics Warde Manuel for the proactive manner in which they have addressed this matter.”

The one-game suspension for West from the MAC matches the one-game suspension implemented by Buffalo Head Coach Turner Gill. West will be able to return to regular season action on Friday, Nov. 27 at Kent State.

West was ejected for a flagrant personal foul following a play in the fourth quarter with 13:17 left in regulation. On the play, Buffalo quarterback Zach Maynard’s pass was intercepted by Ohio’s Thad Turner and during the return West was flagged for the personal foul against an Ohio defensive lineman.

The MAC considers this matter concluded and will have no further comment.
