MAC Tourney Semifinals Recap - Kent vs. Ohio

Live from press row in Quicken Loans Arena at the MAC Tournament in Cleveland, VanDelay Sports brings you our game recaps.

#1 Kent 72, #5 Ohio 59

For our recap of the games we're taking a look at the key statistics that led to the final outcome for each game.

This game was close early, but it ended with Kent State on top by a bunch. For how hot the Bobcats shot against Miami Thursday night, they only managed 37% shooting in this one and just 30% from 3.

Good teams can shoot in the high 30%'s and win, but when you look at the turnover differential and the points off turnovers in this one, it was obvious that the Bobcats were in some trouble. Some key stats in this game:

  • Turnovers: KSU/OU - 8/19
  • Points off turnovers: KSU/OU - 20/3
  • Total personal fouls called: Both teams combined - 45 (27 in 2nd half)

Turnovers, not fouls, were certainly the story of this game, but it would have been nice to see the refs let two teams in a conference semi-final game play a little more. This one was called very tightly.

While Ohio's defense looked pretty good against KSU and their premier shooters for most of the game, those 19 turnovers on offense got their defense into major trouble. The Golden Flashes pressure defense was way too much for the Bobcats to handle, and they found it very tough to find good looks on offense throughout the night.

Final Thoughts
Kent State looked strong in this one, and probably has a real chance to knock off a "power conference" team if they can win the MAC Championship, grabbing the conference's auto-bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Some interesting stats: Kent State improves to 5-0 all-time as a #1 seed in the conference tournament, with this victory Kent State has advanced to the MAC Championship for the 5th time in 6 years. Also a very telling stat after this one, Ohio's record falls to 1-11 when scoring less than 64 points.
